The sun did peek out for just a few seconds on New Years Day.
Select Shots EP (Elevated Photography) was fortunate to be asked to shoot and design the November 2010 cover for Eye On Independence Magazine. One of the feature stories inside is about the Landers Theater in Batesville, AR being restored by the Fellowship Bible Church. I think you can read the article online at www.eyeonmag.com.
This shoot’s location produced several challenges, a large number of power cables on both sides of the road being one and a busy road being another.
Power cables can generally be removed in the studio, although consideration to where they are placed within the image is important. I decided to photograph the building at dawn. The road was also much quieter at this time.
Once again I was amazed at how stable the mast is at 30′. Using portions of various image exposures to capture the range of lighting from the bright lights to the dark shadows I was able to create an image I’m very proud of being on a cover. I finished the image by adding a past Moon shot, starry sky and for a fall/Halloween feel a few leaves to create a border.
I also got to add a few more images to my ‘Batesville – Above The Rest’ Photo book and postcard series I am working on for next year.

The Landers Theater in Batesville was built around 1906 on upper Main Street, the three-story, stone-and-brick building was designed with a stage for traveling thespians. Originally named the Gem Opera House, by 1923 it was a full-fledged movie theater. The first “talking picture” to appear in the region premiered at the Landers in April of 1931.

I have seen many movies and even performed magic shows on stage at this theater. Willie Landers had fixed me and my Dad breakfast several time in the cafe/bar. Doyle Johnston cut my hair as I grew up in the barbershop to the side. This place has a lot of memories. Now it is a church. Who would have ever thought that would happen?
My friend Rick Baber wrote a great article about this called Landers Theater Gets Religion. Check it out!
